Brisbane, Australia, Nominated as a Knowledge-City Region.
‘Smart State’ brand of Brisbane (1998) has started as local economic development strategy basically aiming to create jobs for the future for Queensland. The ‘Smart’ brand has later been extended to other policy areas (i.e. social and urban development) to be a part of global knowledge economy. This branding strategy has restructured the economic activities of Queensland from ‘Sunshine State’ (basically on traditional economic sectors like agriculture, mining, and tourism) to ‘Smart State’ that largely targeting to attract global knowledge-intensive industries like ICT and bio-tech. This, in turn, brings a major shift in the Smart State policy frameworks from modest local economic development strategies to more comprehensive knowledge-based urban development.
